Talk about onesided journalism. Where was NYSUT's voice in this debate? Educators of New York State should be up in arms over the representations made about teachers by Hayden and Lackman. And here's the irony of it all.... NYSUT is a sponsor of the program!

The reality is that NYSUT filed the lawsuit because the regents violated the law when they modified the regulations dealing with teacher evaluation... laws trump regulations. And it's more than just the percentage of the evaluation that will be governed by student state assessments. The Regents chose to violate other sections of the law as well.

This program was some of the worst teacher bashing I have ever heard. Why was no attempt made to present an opposing view? The Capital Pressroom and Susan Arbetter should be embarrassed. If I was interested in such a one-sided and unbalanced discussion, I would go to Fox News.

All of this talk about highly qualified employees, and training looks good on paper, but once people are hired, they come to feel they work in a hostile environment where their needs and safety are of much less worth than those of the residents of such places.

The "culture of secrecy" works both ways. I was on duty as a residential aide when one resident took "weaker" resident behind the garage where he raped her. She was a woman not capable of consenting to such an act. I was ordered NOT to report it to the police.

Also, there is a "culture of permissiveness" where management enables violence by residents against staff and other residents.

Management in Albany has created a watered down and misleading name for the agency being discussed here. The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities is populated by a diverse group of people, many of them with dangerous mental conditions. A number of people are in secure institutional settings because their insanity was cause for not being able to stand trial for violent crimes. It is misleading to label such persons as developmentally disabled.

Is it Albany's intention to throw a cloak over that segment of the population in order to facilitate the emptying of the facilities that now house them.

Why is that segment being ignored in the conversation?

Why are the acts of violence and sexual assaults against staff being ignored in the conversation?

Ms. Arbetter asks questions focused on the institution residents and reports of staff abuse against residents; Comm. Burke's comments focused on the future, insurances to create non-institutional environments for ALL the currently institutional residents.

It sounds great and probably looks great on paper. But it sounds to me like "Albany" is wearing blinders, is not in touch with reality, or worse - just doesn't care as long as the cost is reduced.

Matt Ryan in my opinion, has been the biggest waste of local tax dollars that I know of. Point....with the incompetent way he is running the city of Binghamton and a two year warning that the Binghamton Johnson City Joint sewage Treatment plant sevicing 200,000 upstate residents was in dier need of repair, he chose to ignore that science, those engineering reports, and spent his time putting up a cost of war clock on the city Office Bldg, and building a dog park. "The Joint Sewage Treatment Plant Collapsed" It is now working at less then 1/2 of its compactly dumping hundreds of millions of gallons of partially treated sewage into The Susquehanna River to flow too the Chesapeake Bay. How can he say he represents clean water and be against hydro fracturing, with the criminal neglect of the duties of his office, in my opinion, by not heeding the warnings and engineering documentation two years prior to the collapse. Attending anti drilling rally's and spending tax dollars on Porte Potty's for party's representing one side of the issue while choosing to be deaf to those of us who believe the science and technology of drilling can coincide with the protection of our water. He talks about doing everything right to cut cost by laying off people and putting solar panels that won't pay for themselves on our water treatment plant and supports his minority of followers NYRAD... yet he has shown he is willing to turn his back on NYRAD if the natural gas companies offer his constituents free gas to their homes. Mayor Matt Ryan retained office with only 36 percent of the popular vote. His Idea of success seems to be a dog park and solar panels on a water plant and I would love the opportunity to debate with him the subject of hydro fracturing on your show. Binghamton was just voted the 5th most depressed city to live in and if you were to visit you would know why real fast.

As a retired working person with a disability, I appreciate your show on a regular basis. I'm writing concerning lack of oversight pertaining to care for the developmentally disabled in group home settings. I'm a college graduate. I happen to have Cerebral Palsy in addition I lived in a group home for a year and a half. On occasion I visited many people with disabilities in different group home settings.

The cold reality is many people with disabilities have a variety of limits and needs yet we are still classified under one generic term, "Developmentally Disabled." We unlike other minority groups often don't have the economic or political clout. I had been in the workforce for 33 years. I was in an entry level position at a local hospital in Buffalo. Too often many of my peers have not had the same ability or opportunity afforded me. In tough economic times it easier to minimize the needs of the disabled. Ideally it would have been nice if you had a panel member from an independent living center to articulate these issues.

Thank you for your time. Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Pat Rowe
