The Capitol Pressroom for March 31, 2011
There are no protesters waking up this morning at the Capitol. A complete 5 floor reconnaissance of this building – with 2 dozen Dunkin Donuts in tow — indicates that, besides security, the Senate Sgt at Arms is here and the cleaning staff. According to OGS, the building is only open for business one-hour after lawmakers in session adjourn. Apparently that was hours ago. As a side note, the cleaning staff did astonishing work eliminating any evidence of the protest. The only protester detritus I found was in the Assembly gallery: 10 or so crumpled up sheets of construction paper inked with magic marker demanding lawmakers fund SUNY and CUNY.
Was this Camp-in a success? Activist Ron Deutsch has a few strong opinions on the subject.
Advocates for civil legal services for the poor are concerned that those on the margins who need legal help won’t be able to find it due to state cuts. Lisa Frisch of The Legal Project joins us with a single mother of three who says she would have been killed by her abuser husband if it wasn’t for the kind of the services she received – the very services in jeopardy from budget cuts.
And more on the legal front: Jonathan E. Gradess, the Executive Director of the New York State Defenders Association (NYSDA) will drop by – he has a bleak assessment of the future of indigent legal services, and the court system in the state generally.
