According to the latest Quinnipiac Poll, while most New Yorkers want Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Cuomo to weigh in on budget issues, 72 percent of voters approve of the way the current AG is doing his job and 57 percent of voters view him favorably. These numbers are mountainous hurdles for an underdog like GOP designee Rick Lazio. On the next edition of The Capitol Pressroom, we will speak with Lazio about how he intends to overcome the kind of popularity and name recognition Cuomo enjoys, while at the same time defining himself as a ‘pro-business reformer’.

The top twenty-five hedge fund managers were paid an average of $1 billion each for 2009. Should they help solve New York’s budget problem? According to both Frank Mauro of the Fiscal Policy Institute and Andreas Kriefall of the Hunger Action Network of New York State, that’s not a bad idea. The two of them, along with a coalition of groups which advocate for the poor, have told legislators that Wall Street was part of the budget problem; so it should also be a part of the budget solution.
